Ingredients

For Jeera Rice:

  • Basmati rice: 1 cup
  • Water: 2 cups
  • Cumin seeds (jeera): 1 tsp
  • Ghee or oil: 1.5 tbsp
  • Bay leaf: 1 (optional)
  • Salt: to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves (chopped): for garnish

Making process

Step 1: Prep the Rice:

  1. Wash the basmati rice thoroughly until water runs clear.
  2. Soak it in water for 20–30 minutes. Drain before cooking.

Step 2: Temper the Spices:

  1. Heat ghee in a deep pan or pot.
  2. Add cumin seeds and bay leaf (if using). Let them splutter and become aromatic.

Step 3: Cook the Rice:

  1. Add the soaked and drained rice to the pan. Sauté gently for 1–2 minutes to coat the grains with ghee and jeera.
  2. Pour in 2 cups of water and add salt. Stir once.
  3. Cover and cook on low-medium heat until all water is absorbed (about 10–12 minutes).

Step 4: Rest and Fluff:

  1. Turn off the heat and let the rice rest for 5 minutes.
  2. Fluff gently with a fork and garnish with chopped coriander.
  3. Serve hot with dal, curry, or raita.
