Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • All-purpose flour (maida): 2 cups
  • Yogurt (dahi): 1/4 cup
  • Milk (lukewarm): 1/4 cup
  • Water (lukewarm, as needed): ~1/4 cup
  • Sugar: 1 tsp
  • Salt: 1/2 tsp
  • Instant dry yeast: 1 tsp
  • Oil or ghee: 1 tbsp
  • Butter (for brushing): 2–3 tbsp

Making process

Step 1: Activate the Yeast:

  1. Mix lukewarm milk, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let it sit for 10 minutes until frothy.

Step 2: Prepare the Dough:

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour, salt, yogurt, and activated yeast mixture.
  2. Add water gradually and knead into a soft, smooth dough.
  3. Drizzle oil on top, cover, and let it rest for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Step 3: Roll the Naan:

  1. Punch down the dough and divide it into equal balls.
  2. Roll each ball into a teardrop or oval shape, about 1/4-inch thick.

Step 4: Cook the Naan:

  1. Heat a tawa or skillet until very hot.
  2. Place the naan (wet one side with water) on the tawa with the wet side down.
  3. Cook until bubbles appear, then flip and cook the other side. Optional: Flip directly over flame for charring.

Step 5: Butter and Serve:

  1. Brush hot naan with melted butter.
  2. Serve immediately with paneer, dal, or curry of your choice.
